Overseas Supporters
If you are a regular visitor/subscriber to the 3 Lions Sport website and/or blog you will already know that we advocate overseas fans to travel to the UK to watch their favourite team in action at least once in their life.
The following article is an excerpt from a post on a Manchester United fans forum, that we would like to share with you. It is warming to know that passionate UK fans also welcome and encourage fans from overseas.
Excerpt:
I'm a home and away fan since 1960, and I'm proud of it, but I don't have any axe to grind against long-distance Reds. In fact, one of the great things about being a Red is that you know that you're following the team which has the biggest support base in the World.
I spend a lot of time abroad and it's fantastic to go to places as far afield as Thailand, Canada and New Zealand knowing that you will always find plenty of United fans to talk to. So, I don't have any negative views towards them out-of-towners.
I've got every respect for any Red from anywhere round the World who clearly loves the team and makes a real effort to see them whenever possible. I guess that the real problem for a lot of the regulars at Old Trafford is that sometimes it feels like our club has been hijacked by people who like to say that they are United supporters but don't really share our passion.
Anybody who can say yes to these few basic questions is OK with me!:
If United were a struggling outfit like they were pre-Sir Alex, would you still be supporting them?
If you live abroad and don't normally get the chance to see United, would you make a real effort to go see them if they were on tour and playing in your country?
Wherever you live, is it your real dream to watch the Reds 'live'?
If you live (or are visiting) the other side of the World, are you prepared to get up in the early hours of the morning to watch the Reds on TV?
I respect the opinions of any Red who is prepared 'to go the extra mile' to follow his/her passion. For example, the hundred or so Reds who, along with me, walked miles in the early hours of the morning to an obscure bar in a suburb of Melbourne and paid $25 to watch United on TV playing City in the Cup last season.
I suspect that a lot of so-called United supporters would struggle to truthfully say "yes" even one of the four questions (above).
As for me and quite a few others, we'll go on spending thousands of pounds a year following our passion, come rain or shine.
